  Thursday July 18, 2002 B - Indigo Dye Museum

Phil and our new friend Katie, a Christian English Teacher with the JET program in Tokushima. Like the dainty frocks we are wearing?

Katie tries to decide what pattern to dye her handkerchief.

Cliff sports the old-lady style apron.
Poyao: I just somehow looks right....scary.

Morisawa-sensei invites us to move to the dyeing room.
Poyao: We love Pastor Morisawa! He's a swell guy.

Getting help from a museum employee to wrap our handkerchiefs.

The indigo dye vats.

A special mix of the indigo dye plants and a special mold give this dye a bold and lasting color. It also smells funny.

Poyao creates a cool gradiant pattern.
Poyao: Arm tired. must stop.

Katie irons her new handkerchief to dry it (and set the dye maybe?)

Phil irons his handkerchief.

Cliff irons his handkerchief.

Morisawa-sensei irons his handkerchief.

Sculpture describing the collection and processing of the indigo dye plants.

Phil ponders whether his shirt is indigo or navy.

A traditional Japanese building.

Complete with fake traditional Japanese people!
Poyao: Morisawa-sensei not included!

A cool little tree and pond in the house (see that little basin of water on the left? It was fully of mosquito larvae! Ick!)
Poyao: er....west nile virus?

Phil bowing and offering a gift in one of the rooms with ornamental wood sculptures above.

Andy receives his handkerchief.
Poyao: YOU, give me everything! NOW!

One of the fake Traditional Japanese men receives HIS gift from Katie.
Poyao: Katie gets chummy with one of the mannequins...He's pretty happy about it.

Hey Cliff, watch out for that...
