Question: Is it wrong to purchase violent video games such as the Grand Theft Auto series?
Responses   Votes   Percent
Yes, the games are horrible influences on society and should be banned.    1    16.6%
No. Banning games won't solve the root problem of people not having morals. Moral people aren't influenced by the games.    5    83.3%

I love the blown-up map location on the front page, by the way.

This from a person who aspires to be a developer. Although there are some games that I don't feel have any redeeming qualities, the core purpose for games is action based, and therefore violent.

Well, I believe the core purpose of games is the same as the core purpose of any story, that is, some sort of conflict resolution.

...That means games like The Sims or Syberia don't require violence to be popular. Incidentally, I've never played a GTA game (though that shouldn't really matter anyway).

...It can also be argued that stories don't need a conflict, but that severely lowers their level of plot or interest. Oh, and what's wrong with a sarcastic comment regarding a map on Fil's blog?

   What sarcastic comment?

I believe you left the front page map blown up from the time you were in Japan. Of course, that could have occurred automatically, so it's probably not your fault.

I suppose if I had to place that comment, it would be at the top of this current page (first entry).

Oh, and I guess games don't really need a plot to stay interesting, just a gameplay hook. Seems to work just fine for traditional games from cards to pool.

If Fil wasn't playing Grand Theft Auto for so long, maybe he would not have gotten that speeding ticket a year ago.

Seriously, I don't know much about the gaming industry but my thought is that as long as kids can't legally get the games they are not suppose to get, then that's fine. Otherwise, the govt should step in?just like the banning of cigarette vending machine

...machines. It?s interesting that beer and cigarette vending machines are everywhere in Japan.

Being a witness to Phil's speeding ticket, I say that it had little to do with him playing GTA. Maybe GT3, but definately not GTA. (or maybe it was Carl and I saying "faster! faster!")

On the subject of the map, it is generally bad when 3 of the quadrents are entirely white.

My driving is not affected by games. It IS affected by the speeds that people drive in the suburbs (80+) and the car I own...

If it was games... I'd be doing e-brake turns like a mad man and drifting my car around corners (and into street signs). One day I'd like to see a game with realistic consequences.

Such as when racing an SUV, it falling over, or when adding neon and dubs to your car, your performance suffering... oh yeah, and getting arrested for causing accidents...
Cliff

... and not being able to just shoot the cops to make the problem go away (GTA), right?

Game enthusiasts: I'm thinking about buying one for Xmas, any suggestions? GameCube, Nintendo, XBox?

Depends on the games. For Mario/Zelda/Metroid, try Nintendo; for Halo/KotOR 2/Ninja Gaiden, try Xbox; for San Andreas/MGS3/FFXII/GT4, try PS2.
screw all yall
