 Changing Your Oil

    Click an image to enlarge.
You will need: 12mm socket wrench, 17mm socket wrench, flat head screwdriver, oil filter wrench.

First, elevate your car using ramps or jacks and jack stands.

Then pop the hood and loosen the oil cap which is that yellow cap with the oil symbol on it.

Remove the undertray. While it is possible (but difficult) to drain the oil and remove the filter without doing this, you'll have oil dripping all over your undertray so go ahead and remove it.

For your benefit, I have removed the undertray and provided a picture. The undertray is shown with the bottom up, as it would appear if you were under the car. I have pointed out the 5 bolts (12mm) and 4 clips that need to be removed to take off the undertray as well as where the drain plug and oil filter are in relation to the tray. Close up pictures will follow.

When you get under the car, orient yourself. Here is the oil drain plug, near the center but slightly toward the left side of the car. Notice that the tray has been cut to allow access to the bolt.

Here is the oil filter, near the center but slightly toward the right side of the car. The filter can be reached through a hole in the undertray but you probably won't have enough leverage and it will drip a lot of oil, so remove the undertray.

Two of the bolts are located in the middle of the tray towards the back side. Remove these.

Also remove the bolt in the middle of the tray towards the front side.

On the right side of the car is one bolt and two clips. Remove the bolt. For the clips, use a screw driver to pry out the center peg, which will loosen the clip. Then carefully remove the entire clip.

The left side of the car is basically the same with one bolt and two clips. Remove the bolt. Then remove the clips.

Now remove the underttray by sliding it back and down.

Now you can see both the filter and the drain plug.

Remove the drain plug (17mm) and let the oil drain into a catch pan. Note that the oil will come rushing out VERY quickly so be prepared to hold the catch pan up and close otherwise oil will spray all over.

Leave the oil to drain from the plug. When it is done, replace the crush washer (which may be fused to the drain bolt) with a new one, then return the bolt in the oil pan.

Or, if you prefer, install a Fumoto drain valve instead to make draining oil easier.

After the drain plug has been re-sealed, untighten and remove the oil filter. If it's on tight you may need to use a tool.

Have your catch pan ready as a good amount of oil will drip from the filter as well.

Open a bottle of your new motor oil and get a drip on your finger. Rub it around the seal of the new oil filter and fill the filter 1/2 of the way with oil. Then screw the new filter into place, tightening only 1/2 turn after the seal makes contact.

Then you can fill the rest of the oil through the oil cap. Be warned that the pipe to the oil pan is a bit narrow so don't pour too quickly or it will back up and overflow.

Check for leaks and check your dipstick to insure you have the right levels. Including the oil you put into the filter, you will probably use 4.5 quarts of oil.
