My trip to Hawaii was a bit long since my cheap ticket (bought with points) had three legs. The first stop was in Fayetville (XNA), which I thought was in Indiana but turned out to be in Arkansas. The strange thing was that no one calls it Fayetville, even though that's what my ticket said. I couldn't find my gate because it was listed as Northern Arkansas.

My next leg took me to LAX and finally to Kuhului (OGG) on Maui. Now, my parents were supposed to go through Denver to Kuhului on UA but their flight left 30 minutes early and they weren't informed so they missed. They ended up catching an AA flight to SFO and then to OGG, arriving 5 hours later than originally planned. Luckily that meant they arrived just 15 minutes before I did. Unfortunately, my sister, who flew through Seoul and Honolulu had to wait those 5 hours all alone.

Anyway, Hawaii is pretty nice and overall we're taking it easy instead of trying to cram everything in. Then again, the rest of my family is staying a full two weeks so we have plenty of time to enjoy the island. The weather is pretty nice, though a bit warm for my tastes. On weather.com, all 10 days I will be here was forcasted to be 88 degrees. The one down side is that our hotel, which is decent otherwise, does not have A/C. Apparently there are a good number of businesses and hotels that do not have A/C since it doesn't get quite so unbearably hot here. At night, with all the windows open, it drops to a comfortable 70-72 degrees.

So, on my flight over, I was watching Alton Brown's "Feasting on Asphault," which rekindled my desire to search out local haunts. So I keep telling my family, "NO CHAINS," since we can eat them on "the mainland." So far they've been really good at listening to my objections and suggestions, although it's interesting when they see interesting restaurants and I have to point out that they are chains (e.g. Bubba Shrimp, Maui Taco, etc.) More on some local places we've found tomorrow...

Recommendations
Go to Lahaina and Hana. Take a snorkeling trip to Molikini. Do a novice scuba dive (if you are interested). I recommend Lahaina Divers (I got my PADI cert from them, then went back on a later trip). Go up to see the top of the volcano, but I recommend against the bike tours as their bikes were crap (they put drum brakes so the pads wouldn't have to be replaced as often, but they have no stopping power).

no chains
Make sure you're looking up the highly recommended local restaurants so your experiences end up mostly memorable and extra tasty.

Enjoy your time!
Photos of Jenelle and me in Hawaii are up at http://www.benandjenelle.com We had a great experience with Goofy Foot Surf School in Lahaina, and also snorkeling the Molokini Crater on the "Four Winds II". We also did a kayak/snorkel trip with Maui EcoTours, which was quite fun.

On Maui
He's on Maui, so I don't think he'll be visiting attractions on Oahu (unless that's part of the trip later).
