King's Trail, Makena
We returned to the 1790 Lava Flow with our parents and actually hicked the King's Trail for about a mile, enjoying some of the small beaches and blow holes. Blow holes are rocks that have been shaped in such a way that when waves of water hit them, they spout water out, like a whale's blow hole. There were also some tide pools where we saw a fish that changes colors, a small crab that eats even smaller crabs and a baby eel.

Feast at Lele, LaHaina
This is the most expensive Luau on Maui, a whopping $109 per person. It was sold out for a week but we were put on the wait list and when we got in, we decided to go. You have a four course meal featuring three dishes each from the Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan and Mauri (New Zealand) cultures. The service was good, the open bar was good (we managed 11 drinks), the food was good and the show was good. But aside from the four course meal concept, everything was just good, not great, as you'd expect from the most expensive one around.
In fact, what made the food good was it's unique ethnic origins, not it's quality. They served the worst mahi mahi I had on the island but the food still gets an overall good b/c some of the other dishes were much better. I guess you're paying for the unique concept more than anything else. One other note, the waiter told us we were the only table he's ever seen eat everything from every course. Maybe it was the "exotic" foods that are common to asians (like purple sweet potato, taro, breadfruit, etc.)

Hanafuda Saimin, Kihei
One of the Hawaiian foods we heard about is saimin noodles. We weren't sure what kind of noodles they were so we decided to try this one (they're basically ramen/la-mein), recommended by Daily Gluttony. Of course we saw the dollar bill decorated walls: we estimated a few thousand dollars worth, meaning the restaurant is successful enough to not worry about keeping that amount of money on the wall and not in the bank.
We finally decided on the Sumo Saimin, their largest size bowl with all the fixins including cha-siu, veggies, Japanese fish cakes and the best fried Spam I've ever had (the picture above shows the Sumo after it was split between the four of us). Apparently the cook misheard the order and made two. They asked if we wanted the second one, but we declined. Even so, they split the extra one in half and gave half to us, free of charge.
- Maui Jeep Rental, Kahului - Tired of car rental chains with crappy cars, hidden charges, outrageous taxes, the lack of manual transmissions, the sleazy insurance plans and long lists of rules and restrictions? Feeling a little adventurous and willing to put your personal auto insurance to the test? Then Maui Jeep Rental is the place for you. Call them up, make a reservation, show up and take the car. All they need is a driver's license, proof of insurance and a credit card. A daily rental is $59.99 plus $3 road fee and $4 taxes but a weekly rate is almost half that, plus they'll pick you up at the airport.
You can pick from Cherokees or Wranglers and you can requests upgraded models, manual transmissions and the newly redesigned Wrangler as well. I picked out a Wrangler with over size tires and the owner scrawled down my info, charged my credit card, did a quick walkaround and handed me the keys telling me to bring it back before 6 the next day (see next section). Returning was even easier: I handed him the keys, he looked for any major damage and said, "You're done."

cool pictures
The 800x600 images look pretty good, while the 640x480 ones retain that gauzy Impressionist feel from before (which was not entirely a bad thing). SVGA > VGA, I suppose. Good luck with the next section! (Also, check "hicked" in the first paragraph....)
