Well, I got my ticket for Japan. I decided to just fly coach and save my miles for other stuff. I also purchased a Japan Rail Pass for $267. That will allow me to ride any JR train line in Japan for 7 days which includes many lines in Tokyo as well as shinkansen (bullet trains) to other cities. I will only be using the pass to get around Tokyo and to get to Osaka/Kyoto but I'll still be saving money. The train from the aiport to Tokyo costs $30 and the roundtrip from Tokyo to Osaka/Kyoto costs $240 so the JR Pass is definitely worth it.

The first few days in Japan I'm going to visit some of the friends I met last time I went to Japan. I'll see the sights in Osaka, then Kyoto and then I'll return to Tokyo to help set up for the conference. During the second week, I will be helping out with the conference in whatever areas they need most. I'm getting excited and nervous at the same time. I want to go, but I'm worried because I've never gone to a non-english speaking country alone before. Luckily in Tokyo it shouldn't be too hard to find someone that speaks english, but it'll still be a challenge since it's such an urban sprawl with complex roads.
