My pictures from Japan are now available. Also, you may notice that I've added a new section for Japan to my site up above in the menu. I will be keeping all Japan related information in that section.

Speaking of Japan, some people have asked me about what sort of fun things and what sort of foods I've had since I've already talked about the work and such. To be completely honest, I actually had a good amount of western food, including two trips to McDonald's. I guess since I spent most of my time with westerners, there wasn't quite as much interest in being "adventurous." But even so, here's a diary of my meals.

Nov 1
  • Curry Beef dinner from a convenience store soon after leaving Narita airport.
    Nov 2
  • Omelette & Muffin breakfast @ the Mehn's
  • Miso Ramen lunch in Osaka
  • Okonomiyaki/Izakaia dinner in Osaka w/ 5 Japanese and an Australian. Basically an a la carte type place.
    Nov 3
  • Katsudon (pork cutlet & rice) breakfast @ Osaka Train Station
  • Kobe Beef & Soba-meshi lunch. 100g (3.5oz) Kobe Steak grilled on a teppan (flat metal grill) with Kobe style fried rice & soba noodles with fresh grated Japanese horseradish on the side. Quite a bargain for Kobe beef at only $18 for the meal.
    Nov 4
  • Convenience Store Bakery breakfast on Shinkansen
  • Korean Barbeque dinner in Ikebukuro
    Nov 5
  • Omelette and Roll breakfast @ the Mehn's
  • Tuna Quiche lunch @ the Mehn's
  • Sushi dinner in Shinjuku. My friend and I sat at the sushi bar and had our own Sushi chef to wait on us. I had Uni (sea urchin) for the third time in my life. I've never liked it in the US where it tastes what i think the bottom of the ocean floor must taste like. It was much better in Japan, but still tasted kind of oceany so I still don't like it. I also tried another type of roe (herring I think?) except it was all clumped together instead of loose like smelt or flying fish roe in the US. That was ok. Then I had one other thing that seriously looked like a pile of slugs. Apparently it was actually the same herring roe but recently hatched. Better than the Uni, but not quite to my liking.
    Nov 6
  • Omelette & Apple Roll breakfast @ the Mehn's
  • Unagi nigiri lunch from convenience store
  • Katsudon & cold Sobo dinner
    Nov 7
  • Cinnamon Roll breakfast @ the Mehn's
  • Curry pork lunch @ Niiza-shii Church
  • Pizza Hut dinner in Chiiba w/ Florida Team
    Nov 8
  • Continental breakfast @ hotel
  • Yaki-soba lunch @ highway oasis on the way to Hakone
  • Suki-yaki dinner
    Nov 9
  • Buffet breakfast (eggs, sausage, miso siru, rice, salted fish). I tried Nato (fermented soy beans) for the second time ever. When mixed with soy sauce and ume/seawead sauce, it tasted fine, but was still too sticky and gooky for me.
  • Working sandwich lunch
  • Tonkatsu & spaghetti dinner where I met some Singaporian missionaries
    Nov 10
  • Buffet breakfast
  • Curry beef lunch where I met a missionary from Norway
  • Cabbage dumpling dinner
    Nov 11
  • Buffet breakfast
  • Gyu-don (marinated beef & rice bowl, similar to Bul-go-gi) lunch overlooking Mount Fuji
  • Can't remember the dinner, it wasn't that special... but the cream puffs for dessert were HEAVENLY. I found two extras that I gave to a nice lady I met, and then found a third for myself.
    Nov 12
  • Buffet Breakfast
  • Sandwich lunch
  • Seafood dinner - squid & octopus in tomato sauce (looked like spaghetti O's) and fish, scallop, squid and bacon in gravy.
    Nov 13
  • Continental breakfast on bus back to Tokyo
  • McDonald's lunch in Akihabara
  • Sushi dinner in Odaiba. This was my first dinner in Japan at a restaurant all alone with no English speakers to help translate. My two weeks in Japan added to my Japanese repertoire and I got along fine. After eating sushi for an hour, the bill still only came to about $30.
    Nov 14
  • Continental breakfast @ hotel
  • Gyoza (pot sticker) lunch @ airport
  • Two dinners on the plane and a third dinner when I finally got home after a 13 hour flight.

    "...after a 39 hour"?
How was the Korean barbecue in Japan? Was it run by Koreans (of some-number generation status)?
