The stock STi comes with greenish colored
HVAC lights which don't look so good, so I decided to change them
to blue. The lights are actually tiny little incandescent light bulbs,
not LEDs. They come with little green rubber covers, (aka LED condoms)
so all I have to do it remove those and replace them with blue condoms.
I got two sizes, .12" and .20" I ended up using the .12"
ones only, although they are a bit small. The .2 are a bit large...
i be .16 would be perfect but I don't think they make those. |

To access the HVAC lights, open the cup
holder and remove the two screws. |
Pull open the console face plate starting
at the top right corner and working counter-clockwise. There are 4
clips holding it on, one at each corner. |
Remove the console face plate by loosinging
the four screws on the back, at each corner of the HVAC unit |
Now remove all the knobs. I found the
easiest was was to get a small screw driver and pry them off at the
bottom. Be careful not to scratch your HVAC unit. |
Now, you need to open the front of the
HVAC unit. The front plate is held on by 8 tabs, 4 on the top and
4 on the bottom. Simply pull the top tabs up a bit with your fingernail
or screwdriver. Repeat for the bottom. |
Pull off the face plate and you will see
4 little green lights, as well as 3 LEDs at the top. Be careful not
to bend the LEDs when working.
Pinch each of the green lights and you will find that the green rubber
can be pulled off. It may take a few tries. I found pliers helped
to get a good grip on the rubber which won't always come off very
easily. If the green condoms tear, don't worry, just keep pulling
off pieces until the bulbs are clean. |
Now get some of your .12" condoms.
You may need to trim yours a little. Then slip the condom over the
light bulb. They will be a little small but will stretch until they
fit. Push them as far down the bulb as possible. |
When you're done, it will look like this.
I tried putting condoms over the LED lights as well, but that didn't
work b/c they made them horribly dim.
Simply put everything back in reverse order and you should be good
to go.
I found that the result was not as good as I would like. The new HVAC
lights proved to be a little dim and still a tiny bit greenish since
the little light bulbs are a tad yellow (yellow + blue = green). I
may just change them to red when I get a chance. |
Here's what it looks like when it's done
along with my head unit.
My initial thoughts are that the blue is a tad dim and b/c the light
bulbs are slightly yellow, there's a slight hint of green making the
HVAC lights ever so slightly aqua, instead of blue. However, I still
think it looks pretty good. |
