 The Lizard 2003 - Hour 1

Hour 1 - "Hold On For Dear Life!"

The Lizard began at about 10:30 at a Walmart SuperCenter, but Ben and I got lost and almost missed the event! Luckily we arrived just as the group was pulling out of the parking lot. Since we were late, we didn't know what was going on, nor did we have maps, so we just followed whoever we could. That turned out to be a bad idea because we ended up with the aggressive group. Ben was driving this segment and was pushing the car pretty hard, but those WRXs would keep leaving us behind after the curves. I'd estimate that they regularly broke 100 on the straightaways. We had a couple close calls, one was just a little curve that caused our car to fishtail a little and another was a 4-tire smoking skid to prevent us from rear-ending the CCB WRX.

With Ben driving, all I could do was hold on for dear life as I was tossed around in the curves. I had long since given up taking pictures. Our only saving grace was traffic or other hazards that caused the group to slow down until we caught up. But eventually, the group got farther and farther away. Being without a map, we had no idea which way to go, and eventually the group was so far ahead that we ended up at an intersection with no indication of which way to turn. We ended up waiting 10 minutes before the next "spirited turbo" group showed up (see the last picture) and lent us an extra map and we were on our way again with this new group. We could quickly tell that this group was noticeably more sane and right along the level we could comfortably push ourselves.

Starting off on The Lizard. We're following the only other non-Subaru, a Mazda Protege5.

Driving through the beautiful autumn leaves

The aggressive group... slowly leaving us farther and farther behind.

Everyone's gone! Ben looks around and I put some junk in the trunk while we wait for the next group.

The next group is much more sane. Watch out for that buggy! Turns out we were lost and had to make a u-turn anyway.
