Hour 5 - "We Made It In One
Piece!"
We arrived at the Shoe Box, a large shoe store (whose owner
happens to be a St. Louis Cardinal's fan, as was apparent from
all the Cardinal decorations on the store). At this time I compared
the temperature of my front wheels (which were extremely hot
from all the braking) with other people's cars and mine were
much warmer. From driving, I now know one of the big weaknesses
of my car is my brakes. I have no ABS and only drum brakes in
the rear and as a result I had a lot of brake fade and my brakes
were getting extremely hot. I'm actually surprised that I never
had smoking brakes and didn't warp my discs!
I also got a chance to look more carefully at the strange noises
my car was making. The noise had gotten less and less noticeable
towards the end of the run. After a comment from someone about
seeing something hanging from my car, Ben and I got down and
discovered the source of our problems: a branch that gotten
lodged into the undercarriage of my car! It seems that as we
continued to drive, it was broken into smaller and smaller pieces
until it stopped making any noises. Even so, I still pulled
a foot long stick out of my car.
After talking with an STi owner and the rest of the group, they
headed to Madison for dinner, while Ben and I decided to head
back to Chicago. That turned out to be a good idea because about
an hour later, all the adrenaline wore off and the mental condition
of both Ben and I quickly went downhill. |
