Hour 2 - "The Tables Are
Turned!"
A little over an hour into the event, our new group stopped
to take a break and heed the call of mother nature. I switched
with Ben and finally got to drive. Armed with the map and his
new GPS Navigation, Ben began to delve into what it meant to
be a navigator only to find out how difficult it was to be in
the passenger seat and not in control. He quickly learned why
I had given up taking pictures for a while! But as wel got used
to it, Ben came up with a rule for instructions: distance -
difficulty - length. For instance: in 200 feet, easy left, 200
feet long. 500 feet, hard right, 100 feet into an easy left,
500 feet.
We started to get the hang of driving and navigating and things
were running more more smoothly. There was another close call
though: high speed + bad brakes + understeer + hairpin turn
+ wooden post = BAD. We were coming up fast to a harpin turn
and I didn't brake early enough and tried to take the curve
too closely. I reached for the hand brake to help the car turn,
but everything happened too fast and my line was bad so all
I could do was bring the car to a stop, just 1 foot from the
edge of the road and a big 4" wooden post. It wasn't as
bad as it sounds, or even as it looked as I could actually complete
the turn without backing up or anything but it could have been...
Soon after, we safely arrived at Subway for lunch, then we stopped
at McDonald's to meet up with everyone else before the second
half of the event. |
