Japan 11/01/2007 - Namjatown, Sunshine City, Ikebukuro
|

Namjatown by Namco is located in the International Building in the Sunshine City complex just northeast of Ikebukuro station. It is an adventure/game theme park run by Namco with an admission price of ¥300.
The place made me think of the flying theme park that Cloud visits in Final Fantasy VII. In fact, the park made me feel like I was in a Final Fantasy game because one room was so randomly different from another one. As I walked around, I kept finding myself asking "WTF is going on?" and "Are they on crack?"
For instance, Namjatown has this mini theme park (right) dedicated to spa services (e.g. massages, manicures, pedicures). What does that have to do with anything? Random. Of course, there was a bunch of different mini-theme parks including Gyoza Stadium, Ice Cream City and Dessert Forest (with a Mont Blanc dessert "tour" special). |

Near the entrance is this elaborate stair case that doesn't really serve much purpose otherwise. |
|
Here is the top of the stair case with a bronze Namjatown logo. Next I found this totally random karaoke ride. I had no idea what was going on but all thes little kids and their mothers were waiting in line to ride so I had to take a picture. |
|
Usually when I think of Namco, I think of video games, usually cute kid ones. Apparently they make beer too. |

Namjatown is really weird. One minute I was in the lobby, the next I was in a dark haunted maze where I found this kamitachi cage. I had a couple people translate it and supposedly it holds a spirit of some sort (kami = god) and if you lay under it with a bad fortune, the kamitachi will take it away or something. The red sign indicates that it is undergoing repairs at the moment. |

Near the entrance was this interesting hamburger restaurant called Big Man (instead of Big Boy???). |
|
Except, it's apparently not a hamburger but some sort of bacon or pork burger |
|
Here was some sort of adventure game. This father and children are carrying some cute manga style animals. These are used to activate different kiosks, land marks and activity centers throughout the theme park to make it an adventure game for kids. |

Here is Navaju, an Indiana Jones type adventure game. Participants use some sort of detector to explore Namjatown. It signals when a special area is detected, after which you have to wind up the detector to do something (reveal information? score points?). Here you can see a woman reading her detector (right).
There were other adventure games as well, like the G-bomber which is an adventure about aliens taking over Earth by sending bionic bombs. To beat G-bomber, participants had to press little red buttons. I saw kids, mothers and even single men playing G-bomber. |

Here is a hidden passage that was revealed by a bunch of teenagers with detectors. Quite interesting... |
